THE COMPETITION

The GOLDEN EMPANADA trophy is the holy grail for Melbourne’s empanada chefs.

There are two awards. The PROFESSIONAL section, judged by some of Melbourne’s food luminaries, and the PEOPLE’S CHOICE section, judged by the people. Competition is fierce, and both trophies are hotly contested on the day.

Contenders for the 2018 GOLDEN EMPANADA competition are:

SAN TELMO
LECHONA BROS
HARLEY HOUSE
LITTLE LATIN LUCY
BURN CITY SMOKERS

2018 RESULTS

Competition was fierce this year, with crowd favourite’s San Telmo returning to defend their title. But in an upset that will go down in Gauchito Gil history, it was Little Latin Lucy that took out the Judge’s Choice trophy in a blind tasting. Newcomers Lechona Bros won the People’s Choice – not surprising considering the head chef was part of the San Telmo/CHE/Pastuso clique. Well done to all involved!

THE JUDGES

The judges for 2018’s GOLDEN EMPANADA competition:

Sofia Levin: Sofia’s known for a lot of things, but on top of her iron guts, being the Food Editor for The Weekly Review, a writer for Lonely Planet and Good Food, she’s probably best known for her role as fur mum to Insta-famous @lifeofjinkee.

Gemima Cody: The big dog, Gemima is chief restaurant critic for The Age/Good Food. Just a whisper of her name in any restaurant is enough to make its chef crap his or her pants.

Katya Wachtel: In less than a year, Katya has been promoted from Melbourne Editor to Editorial Director of Broadsheet, nationally! Judging empanadas at Gauchito Gil’s Malbec Day is the logical next step for this one.

Hilary McNevin: Hilary’s as legit as they come. She’s been writing about food for a really long time, and before that, she has actual experience working in restaurants, so you know she’s the real deal.

Anna Webster: Team REVEL’s Head of Content and also a freelance food journalist, writing for Good Food, Broadsheet and more, this was Anna’s third year at the GOLDEN EMPANADA judging table.

THE CRITERIA

Over swigs of Malbec, our expert panel will chew blindly through some of the best empanadas in Melbourne, and judge them on the below criteria.

Each component is worth five points:

  • Pastry
  • Filling
  • Consistency
  • Deliciousness.
